Buying Lies

post117graphicWhat lie have you purchased lately? None? No one buys a lie, right? Wrong. We buy lies all the time. Every time we buy into something that is not true, we are purchasing a lie. What lie(s) have you purchased…

“You’re hopeless”

“You’ve ruined your life.”

“You’ll never amount to anything.”

“You’ll always be alone.”

“You’ll never be any different.”

“You’re too fat/skinny.”

“You’re ugly.”

“You’re stupid.”

“You can’t do anything worthwhile.”

“You’re the worst mom/dad of all time.”

“You’re damaged goods.”

“Nobody wants you now, or ever.”

“You’d be better off dead.”

“You’ll never be able to overcome your past.”

“You’ll never be sober/clean.”

“You can’t outrun your reputation.”

“If you love me, you’ll do this.”

“We’re consenting adults, no one will get hurt.”

“It’s not really porn if it’s a best seller.”

“God can’t use you.”

Have you bought any of those lies? The currency is not always cold hard cash; it is more personal than that. Did you exchange your innocence, your self esteem, your future, your heart, your peace of mind, your relationships, your integrity, your good name, your reputation, or your freedom for the lie? Do you regret what you paid?

Lies are being sold every day but we don’t have to purchase them. We can know the truth and we can hold on to the truth. The truth is that you are valuable to God. You are worth more than you can imagine. You are worth the very life blood of Jesus, God’s one and only Son.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned…” – John 3:16-18a

The Devil will try to sell you a bunch of lies that will undermine that precious truth. He will try to convince you that you are, and always will be, condemned – that you are worthless, unloved, unnecessary, and useless. You are not.

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.” – Ephesians 2:4-5

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

You don’t have to believe the lies. You are not hopeless, useless, or ruined. There is no mistake that cannot be confessed and forgiven. There is no error in judgment that cannot be redeemed. There is no sin that cannot be washed away.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9

Anyone who says anything else is a liar. Jesus calls the devil the father of lies…

“He was a murder from the beginning, not holding to truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” – John 8:44

Just because you bought a lie once, does not mean that you must hold on to it forever. You can exchange it for the truth. You can stop listening to the lies of the evil one and listen to the voice of Jesus, who is the truth.

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31-32

Are you ready to cast aside the lie that has prevented you from becoming the person God desires you to be? Are you ready to embrace the truth that you are of great value to God? Will you choose today to listen to the voice of Truth?

Well said, Marcia! One more scripture came to me from 2Timothy 4:3-4, “For a time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from truth and turn aside to myths.”

  2. I call those lies “tapes” that run inside my mind, over and over and over. Some were put there by a verbally abusive mother. It takes a lot of work to overcome these lies, but it can be done. God’s Word NEVER lies to us! Thanks for a wonderful post!
