Was It All For Me?

crown-of-thorns2Jesus, when you stumbled under the weight of the cross, was that the moment you felt the weight of my sin? Did you question the Father: “Her?”

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. – Isaiah 53:4

Jesus, when they cracked the whip and the metal shards pulled the skin off your back did you feel the pain of my hand as it spanked my child in anger.

He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. – Isaiah 53:5

Jesus, when the soldiers yelled and taunted you, did hear the sharp sting of my words as I talked down to my co-workers, siblings, parents, grandparents, husband and children?

He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. – Isaiah 53: 7

Jesus, when the crowd called out “Barabbas!” did you hear me go along with them rather than be identified with you?

He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. – John 1:0-11

Jesus, when they thrust the thorns into your brow, were you repulsed by the number of times I thought I deserved more, or better, or different than the things you had given me?

All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. – Isaiah 53:6

Jesus, when they drove the stake into your feet, did you experience the pain of my disobedience? Did you hear me defiantly say, “No, I won’t go there!”?

He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross. – 1 Peter 2:24

Jesus, when they nailed your hands to the cross, did you think about the times I refused to serve your children because I had other, better, things to do?

He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels. – Isaiah 53:12

Jesus, when the sky was dark, was it my shame that blocked the sun?

God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light. – John 3:19

Jesus, when you heard the scoffers, was it my voice you heard yelling out of control as I demanded obedience from my children?

He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross. This includes you who were once far away from God. – Colossians 1: 20-21

Jesus, when you said, “It is finished!” were you revolted by my thoughts that I didn’t need a Savior?

No one is righteous – not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away… – Romans 3:10-12

Jesus, when you died, and they laid your body on the cold slab in the darkness of the tomb, did the weight of my guilt press down upon you?

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” – Romans 5:8

Jesus, what can wash away my sin?

Nothing, but the blood of Jesus!

For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.” – Hebrews 10:10

Polar Vortex? It’s My Fault!

The temperature is -3 on its way to -18 and I have to apologize to everyone because the cold is my fault.

You see, I’ve been putting off organizing the cabinet under my bathroom sink for months. It’s easy to pretend the mess isn’t there when it’s hidden. And, it’s so easy to hide: just close the door and it’s gone! Outa sight. Outa mind. Life is good.

Until the temps hover below zero for days on end, and the cabinet doors have to stay open so the pipes on the exterior walls don’t freeze.

MarciaSink1a

UGH! There it is, staring at me, daring me to dig deep. What will I uncover? Garish lipsticks, old eye shadow, and duplicate purchases because I forgot what was in there. Bottles of nail polish used just once. Waste and disorder.

It shouldn’t surprise me that God is going to this length to get me to clean, purge and organize the impulse purchases and hidden mistakes in my cabinet. He goes to even greater lengths to get me to look deep into my heart and purge the mistakes (sins) that are hidden there.

He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. – 1 Corinthians 4:5 NIV

God does this. He reveals hidden sin so that I might confess, purge, repent and be cleansed. God causes me to look at the hidden sin in my heart because sin is a barrier that separates me from intimacy with God and God wants a relationship that is free of barriers.

God knows the deepest darkest caverns of your heart and mine. He knows the impulse purchases we try to forget. He knows the garish mistakes. He knows the reality of what is hidden there.

For the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought – 1 Chronicles 28:9 NIV

We may try to hide our sins, but nothing is hidden from God. God won’t let us hide. He loves us and wants us cleansed.

O God, you know how foolish I am; my sins cannot be hidden from you. – Psalm 69:5

We may try to close the door and pretend the mess isn’t there, but God won’t let the door stay closed. He allows circumstances or events in our lives that force us to open the door and confront the reality of sin.

When we acknowledge the mess, confess, and repent, God’s cleansing light of forgiveness floods every deep corner of our hearts.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.  – 1 John 1:9 NLT

God cornered me. He does frequently, and when He does, I cleanse, purge and organize. My heart is good and my cabinet is too. You can expect the temps to start rising any moment!

Christmas Lights

 MarciaTree2013

Dad was an early riser, and every year during the Christmas Season, he’d get up early and turn on all the Christmas lights so that Mom would walk into a brightly lit and festive living room first thing in the morning.

Last week, mom decorated the tree by herself, and at the end of the day, she turned the lights off and went to bed. The next morning when mom got up, she walked into a dark living room. The tree was there, the lights were in place, but everything was still dark when she got up.

We don’t like the dark. Children are afraid of the dark. Bugs come out in the dark. Wickedness happens in the dark. And darkness signals the end of the day. For Mom, the darkness is a reminder that Dad is not there. It is empty in the dark.

When we were little, Dad would bundle us kids up and drive around for what seemed like hours just to look at Christmas lights. Mom didn’t usually go with us, I don’t know why, maybe it was too cold, but when we got home there would be lots of newly wrapped presents under the tree! How did that happen!?

However, throughout the years when it was just mom and dad, mom went on those drives with dad. They had their favorite neighborhoods and houses that they’d drive by and enjoy. One of mom kids will take her out this year.

Christmas lights are a great tradition, yet I wonder, why do we put lights up at Christmas? So I Googled: “Why do we put lights on Christmas Trees?” and an article said, “As Christians, we believe that God is the light of the world.”

By putting lights on our houses and trees, we are testifying to the world: I believe God is the light of the world, and I believe that God came down and lived among us. We are not simply decorating; we are proclaiming truth in a dark world.

John 1:1; 8:12 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Matthew 1:23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”)

At Christmas we celebrate the incarnation of the eternal God in the Person of Jesus, who is the Light of the World.

Our Christmas lights shine forth for God because God calls each of His children to be light in the world; we are to let His light shine through us in our words and our deeds. Everything we do as Christians should be done to make God famous.

Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

During Dad’s final days in his body, he said to me, “If I survive this, my house is going to be a beacon for Jesus!” His body didn’t survive, but his soul did, he is brightly priaising Jesus in heaven today! And his house is shining also! The Christmas lights are on again this year, inside and out of Mom and Dad’s house as they always have been.

This year Dad is celebrating with Jesus in eternal light. We know this because Dad believed that God, in the Person of the Lord Jesus, left the glory of heaven, and being made in human likeness, lived a sinless life, humbled himself and died on a cross as Dad’s substitute — paying the penalty for Dad’s sins —  and then he rose from the dead three days later, and now he is exalted in heaven as Lord over all!

Merry Christmas, Dad!
